So alittle about me! I'm a fifteen year old girl in highschool,that lives in U.S.A. I have six pets. Four cats (Sally,Kevin,Ralphy,and Mabel) A dog (Mixed breed of cocker spaniel,pointer,pitbull,and a lot of other stuff x3) (Dusty) and a turtle named Markers! Explain to me please?

So the other day I was working on an adopt,and I had like a bunch of different layers and was fairly happy with how it was looking.
Anyway,I had to log off my computer,and when I come back to start working on it again,I realize all the layers mushed into one layer and all my coloring and outlines and all that were stuck together and I couldn't work on it anymore without messing it up.
I know it's to late to save that piece now probably but could someone please tell me if there's a certain way I need to save it to save each layer,or does it always do that? (I use paint tool sai) Any feed back greatly appreciated! ^~^
